ClassNK says that after an exhaustive review of the MOL Comfort's design, as well as the plan approval process, it has concluded that the vessel design fully complied with all requirements of the ClassNK Rules and International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) regulations.

The review was part of an ongoing investigation into the June 17 incident that saw MOL Comfort break in two during adverse weather around 200 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen.

The investigation is being conducted by the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), the vessel's builder Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and government authorities.

MOL said last week that Lloyd's Register (LR) has been brought in as a technical consultant to help determine the cause of the incident.

In the meantime, the six sister vessels of MOL Comfort are to undergo hull strengthening work in a move described as an "extra preventive measure."

Ship & Bunker's Inside Opinion has asked whether the incident indicates that current construction methods are insufficient for today's mega-sized box ships.
