Danish shipping firm Ultrabulk Shipping A/S (Ultrabulk) has announced an order for what it describes as a "new generation super ECO-designed handysize bulker."

The 38,000 dwt vessel, whose features will include an electronic main engine, is expected to improve fuel efficiency by more than 15% and make a corresponding reduction in CO2 compared to existing similar sized handysize bulkers.

Ultrabulk say they placed the order with "a major Japanese ship yard" for delivery in 2014, with Ultrabulk's option to extend the order with one additional vessel.

Henrik Sleimann Petersen, Ultrabulk Executive Vice President and Head of Shipholding said the shipyard spent "considerable efforts" designing the vessel and Ultrabulk was "pleased to support them by investing in this new generation of super ECO-designed environmentally friendly unit."

Per von Appen, Executive Vice President and Head of Ultrabulk's Handysize segment said, "We are looking forward to serving our industrial clients with the latest generation of 'green' handysize bulkers."

The company said the order was the first super ECO-designed new-build order they have placed as part of their long term strategy of fleet renewal and expansion.
