DuPont Sustainable Solutions (DuPont) has announced it is to fit two Condor Ferries (Condor) with scrubber systems.

DuPont subsidiary BELCO will supply the Guernsey-based RoPax ferry company operating in the English Channel.

Under the deal Condor will install four, single-stream, open-loop scrubbers split across its Commodore Clipper and Commodore Goodwill ferries by autumn this year, with performance testing to be carried out in early 2016.

The vessels are said to be of a similar size, each driven by two 4.5 MegaWatt main engines, with each engine set to have a dedicated scrubber post-installation.

Oceanox Ltd. will manage the project, while Houlder will act as naval architect.

According to DuPont, the scrubbers will allow the ferries to continue to operate on heavy fuel oil (HFO) while inside the European Emissions Control Area (ECA).

“By fitting Commodore Clipper and Commodore Goodwill with these scrubbers, we will minimize sulphur oxide and particulate emissions whilst keeping prices as low as possible for freight transport to and from the islands,” said Cpt. Frances Collins, Executive Operations Director for Condor Ferries.

Last week, a German environmental group criticised the use of scrubbers to reduce air pollution, saying they merely transfer pollution to the sea instead.
