Four Finnlines vessels will be fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems from Alfa Laval by the time new emission rules go into effect in European Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) at the start of next year, according to the scrubber maker.

The RoRo and Ropax ships, which operate in the Baltic Sea and North Sea ECAs, will use Alfa Laval's PureSOx systems.

"Finnlines' objective is to guarantee long-term profitability through high-quality operations, and the installation of scrubber systems on our modern RoRo vessels is a major step in the implementation of our strategy," said Finnlines President and CEO Emanuele Grimaldi.

"Installing PureSOx from Alfa Laval will allow us to comply with ECA limits while ensuring continued fuel economy."

Retrofits of the ships will take place from December 2014 to January 2015.

Two of the vessels operate on single engines, while the other two use two engines, necessitating multiple-inlet scrubbers.

"Having multiple inlets will allow us to reduce the space and equipment requirements aboard the Finnmill and Finnpulp by using one scrubber to handle both engines," said René Diks, manager for Marketing & Sales, Exhaust Gas Cleaning at Alfa Laval.

The scrubber systems may be converted to add closed-loop operation in the future if necessary.
Alfa Laval has also ordered scrubber systems from Wärtsilä Corp. (Wärtsilä) for some of its vessels.
