Norway's Clean Marine says it will supply exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCSs) for a very large gas carrier (VLGC) that Hyundai Heavy Industries is building for Dorian LPG Ltd. (Dorian).

"The contract signals a growing market demand for Clean Marine's unique and competitive multi-stream EGCS solution," said Clean Marine CEO Nils Høy-Petersen.

"We are very pleased to be selected by HHI, the world's largest shipbuilder, and look forward to deliver a cost-effective solution to help Dorian LPG comply with existing and pending emissions regulations."

Dorian currently operates three modern VLGCs and a pressurised LPG vessel, and it has ordered three fuel-efficient VLGCs from HHI, scheduled for delivery in 2014, with an option for three more such vessels.

Clean Marine says its system, which can operate in low alkaline and saline water, will allow ships to operate in emissions control areas (ECAs) without switching fuels.

"The Clean Marine system supplied to the new Dorian LPG vessel will clean both sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter emissions from one main engine, three auxiliary engines, and one boiler," Høy-Petersen said.

"In total, a single Clean Marine EGCS unit will manage five exhaust sources."

Clean Marine has said its EGCS was the first of its kind to allow a ship to travel inside the U.S. ECA while burning high sulfur fuel oil.

This fall, Scorpio Tankers, which has been focused on acquiring eco-vessels, announced that it was trading its fleet of 11 VLGCs plus $1.9 million for a stake in Dorian.
