ABB, in a recently released video which profiles one of the company's clients, Dockwise Ltd (Dockwise), says its integrated automation systems, fleet-wide marine software, and performance management solutions can save vessel operators money on their bunker bills, and provide a return on investment (ROI) within a year.

"By leveraging the internet of things and working with shipping companies ABB is helping make more efficient and safe operations," stated ABB.

Dockwise, which transports oil rigs, ships, tankers, and related equipment, is said to be one of a number of ABB clients using its software to monitor vessel performance and reduce bunker costs.

"For the shipping companies fuel is cost, and on top of that you have now also fuel is environmental burden," said Jaap Jan Stoker, Marine and Ports Product Manager at ABB, noting that these are the two main drivers for companies to utilise the technology.

"It becomes more complex, they have to run two different fuel types and there is where software comes in as a really efficient tool," said Stoker, adding: "it's about payback periods, and with software you can offer solutions with payback within one year."

In April, Ship & Bunker reported that ABB had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cavotec SA (Cavotec) to jointly offer complete shore power solutions to ports around the world, a move that ABB says will encourage the development of "green ports."
