A Malaysia-flagged chemical tanker that went missing last week has been found and detained by Malaysian authorities, Seatrade Global reports.

The Sun Birdie was carrying around 700 tonnes of marine fuel oil (MFO) and 11 crew at the time it lost contact with its owner late Wednesday night.

It was reported that the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) found the ship late Thursday night, where authorities then apprehended seven suspects aboard the ship.

“The MMEA brought the vessel to Penggerang for further investigation,” said the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against ships in Asia (ReCAAP).

“Another two perpetrators jumped overboard and fled.”

The two who attempted to escape were later picked up by a passing ship.

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) released statistics earlier this month that showed Asia seeing a significant jump in piracy cases last year, accounting for three quarters of global maritime piracy in 2014.
