Coatings manufacturer Hempel A/S (Hempel) Monday announced in an emailed statement that it has developed two innovative coatings for marine application.

The new pure epoxy coatings add to Hempel's existing HEMPADUR range and are designed for cargo tanks and ship surface maintenance respectively.

Two-coat cargo tank coating, HEMPADUR 15600, is said to be compliant with International Maritime Organization (IMO) Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC) rules for cargo oil tanks.

The coating is understood to remain resistant to continuous immersion in a range of chemicals, including crude oil up to 80 degrees Celcius, meaning it is suitable for cargo oil tanks, grey and black water tanks, mud and bring tanks, and refrigerated seawater fish tanks.

According to Hempel, the new coating "delivers significant benefits not seen before in a single pure epoxy product."

HEMPADUR 15600 can be applied in ambient temperatures down to minus 5 degrees Celcius offering flexibility to shipyards and dries fast after application.

Hempel also said its HEMPADUR EASY 47700 surface primer responds to the market need for a "reliable, user friendly and flexible coating for use in dry-dock under all climate conditions."

The primer is also pure epoxy-based and is said to be applicable to repair most ship surfaces above or below the waterline, requiring minimal surface preparation.

It can be applied at temperatures down to minus 10 degrees Celcius and up to 40 degrees Celcius enabling almost year-round use at many yards.

In December, Hempel launched antifouling coatings it said would lead to 3 percent fuel savings.
