GTT North America (GTT NA) has received an approval in principal for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge from DNV GL, the company said in a press release published on the industry news site LNG World News.

The 2,200 cubic meter barge uses a membrane Cargo Containment System (CCS) from GTT NA's parent company, France's Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT).

The CTT CCS technology is used by about 70 percent of LNG carriers globally.

"This Approval in Principle from DNV GL, the world's largest class society and well known developer of technology enabling LNG as fuel for short sea shipping, is a major step forward in demonstrating the suitability of the GTT membrane systems for LNG storage and transportation within North American waters," said Aziz Bamik, GTT NA general manager.

"The robust and highly competitive GTT solutions for the North American market complement the on-going price quotation with local shipyards."

Tony Teo, DNV GL's Houston-based technology and business director, said the GTT membrane system is preferable to a Type C tank containment system.

"It allows for better volumetric efficiency, which is a concern for ship types where sacrificing revenue-earning space for bunker is often a show-stopper," he said.

GTT, which has called the LNG bunkering segment important to its future growth, reported that it received its first orders from that sector earlier this year.
