Extra Efficiency Lands Rolls-Royce Propulsion Systems Deal
Rolls-Royce says it will supply an energy-saving integrated propeller and rudder system for two car- and truck-carrying ships ordered by Neptune Lines, a U.S.-based logistics provider.
In addition to the Promas propulsion systems, the power systems company will provide steering gear and deck machinery for the ships.
The two vessels, which are being built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. (HMD) in South Korea, had originally been slated to use a propulsion system for another supplier, but Rolls-Royce said Neptune Lines found additional model testing pointed to efficiency gains from the Promas system.
"Neptune Lines were determined to install an energy saving propulsion system on these ships, and I'm delighted that they have chosen Promas," said Neil Gilliver, Rolls-Royce, President - Merchant.
"The test results exceeded our expectations, showing significantly higher propulsion efficiency than our competitor.
"This contract not only recognises the quality and reliability of our system but also opens up future business opportunities with Neptune Lines."
HMD and Rolls-Royce have also agreed to further model testing of Promas to evaluate the possibility of using it in other vessel designs.
Rolls-Royce's marine order book grew sharply in 2012, rising 44 percent over the previous year, but the gains came mostly from defense, and oil and gas segments while the merchant sector continued to struggle.
