Japan's Eco Marine Power Co. Ltd. (EMP) Friday announced the production of its bunker saving "EnergySail" rigid sail technology has begun in Onomichi, Japan.

As has been previously reported by Ship & Bunker, EMP has been developing and working towards the commercialisation of its wind and solar power ship propulsion systems for a number of years, and called today's news "another important step towards bringing its rigid sail technology onto ships."

"EMP's EnergySail technology is scalable and can be applied to vessels ranging from coastal freighters to large passenger ferries and cruise ships," said EMP.

EnergySail's production and shore-based testing is said to be slated for completion during the second half of 2016, at which time an extended evaluation phase will be conducted on the technology, including vessel trials and consultations with classification societies.

EMP says, in co-operation with KEI System, it is currently finalising the sensor package for the EnergySail, which will enable the device to be fully automated when linked to its EnergySail Automated Control System (ACS).

Further, the company notes that Furukawa Battery Co., Ltd. will be providing an energy storage solution for the EnergySail project.

In October, EMP announced that it has been granted a patent in Japan related to its Aquarius Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) System.
