Fincantieri - Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. (Fincantieri) has announced that Virgin Voyages has placed a €2 billion ($2.08 billion) order for three vessels that will feature energy recovery to reduce overall environmental impact.

"These ships will stand out for original design and craftsmanship," said Fincantieri.

"They will include some highly innovative ideas and design solutions, notably for energy recovery, reducing the overall environmental impact."

The shipbuilder notes that the vessels will utilise diesel engine waste heat through energy production systems of about 1 MW each.

"The result is, therefore, a project which distinguishes Virgin Voyages in the worldwide cruise scenery," added Fincantieri.

The vessels, which will be about 110,000 gross tonnes upon completion, will host more than 2,800 passengers and 1,100 crew members on board.

The three units are said to be slated for delivery scheduled in 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively.
