Dual-fuel engine systems, combined with electric propulsion, can reduce fuel costs up to 30 percent at high loads, according to General Electric (GE) [NYSE:GE].

The company says its dual-fuel systems have grown in popularity in recent years, and the technology offers the added benefit of increasing cargo capacity by 3 to 5 percent by allowing for more efficient layout of equipment.

GE is highlighting the power systems, along with other offerings like compressed natural gas refueling technology and compressor train technology for floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations, at Gastech 2012 in London this week.

In August, GE announced that it was supplying electric propulsion systems for 23 new LNG ships being built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Hyundai Heavy Industries, representing a total propulsion power of 1,105 megawatts.
