Stena Bulk says an energy efficiency and fuel conservation program initiated at the start of the year will save it SEK 65 million ($9.7 million) a year and reduce sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions by around 1,400 metric tonnes in 2013.

The Swedish company attributes half of the savings to technological improvements and half to commercial and operational measures.

"We have always been at the cutting edge when it comes to technological developments, but now we have also succeeded in achieving operational excellence, which is having a major impact," said President and CEO Erik Hånell.

"We are delighted to see that our ambitious project for increasing energy efficiency, where we are working with a specific energy budget for each vessel and voyage, has had immediate and very positive results."

Stena claims its new Suezmax tankers offer the best fuel efficiency in their class, with fuel consumption 25 percent lower than comparable vessels had two to three years ago and 40 percent lower than vessels dating from the late 1990s.

Aside from vessel technology, the company has improved efficiency by sailing its ships at the most efficient speed given the specific vessel, voyage, and freight market conditions.

Early this year, Stena Bulk and fellow Swedish operator Concordia Maritime ordered six to 10 fuel-efficient tankers capable of reducing costs by $3,000 to $5,000 per day.
