Carnival Orders its "Most Efficient" Ships Ever
Global cruise line operator Carnival Corp. (Carnival) Thursday announced it has ordered nine of the "most efficient" new cruise ships in its company history.
"These will be the most efficient ships we have ever built," said CEO and President, Arnold Donald.
The ships are planned for delivery over four years, between 2019 and 2022 and will enter service on established European and North American routes, as well as in China.
The contracts are split across two European shipbuilders, with Italian Fincantieri S.p.A securing five of the ships and German Meyer Werft securing four.
"We're excited to take this next step in our fleet enhancement plan with these two new agreements that are consistent with our long-term strategy of measured capacity growth over time," said Donald.
Carnival is adding two new ships to its fleet in 2015 and retiring four.
The Britannia has already been launched under the P&O brand and the AIDAprima is set to be launched later in the year.
The AIDAprima "is expected to be one of the most technically advanced and sustainable cruise ships ever built," said the company.
Last year, Carnival announced it would fit scrubbers on 70 of its cruise ships to comply with new, tighter emissions regulations.
On Friday, Carnival announced that its per tonne bunker costs had fallen as well as consumption in the first quarter of 2015.
