Bunker Costs Force Maersk Route Closures
Maersk Line has said a rise in bunker prices, coupled with a downward trend in freight levels, has made it "necessary" to end its direct coverage from Peru and Chile to Northwest Europe.
The Andean Service will be phased out throughout May with service to Peru and Chile continuing via Balboa, Panama.
A list on tentative transit times have been issued in the company's press release.
The A.P. Moller – Maersk Group company says it will continue to offer a direct Santa Marta to North Europe corridor at an improved transit time of 12 days.
The last vessel sailing from Latin America direct to North Europe will be the Marianne Schulte, 1208, expected to depart (ETD) from San Antonio, Chile on 20 May 2012 and Callao on 23 May 2012.
The last vessel sailing from North Europe direct to Latin America will be the Thekla Schulte, 1209, expected to depart (ETD) from Rotterdam, Netherlands on 23 May 2012; Tillbury, UK on 24 May 2012; Hamburg, Germany on 26 May 2012, and Antwerp, Belgium on 28 May 2012.
