Canada-based maritime battery manufacturer Corvus Energy (Corvus), highlighting the use of its lithium ion energy storage system (ESS), congratulated Seaspan Ferries Corporation (SFC) on the recent delivery of its new "state-of-the-art" vessel, which can run on diesel, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and battery power.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, on Friday, SFC marked the arrival of Seaspan Swift, which is said to be the first of its kind in operation in North America, and the first of two new dual-fuelled hybrid ferries set to be added to the company's fleet.

"We are proud to be working with Seaspan, a fellow Canadian company and an innovator in its business operations," said Andrew Morden, President and CEO of Corvus.

"Seaspan's commitment to environmental sustainability is industry-leading and Corvus looks forward to working with them to integrate Corvus Energy ESS solutions into their future vessels."

The vessel's Corvus lithium ion ESS is noted to operate as spinning reserve and provides propulsion power for low-speed maneuvers.

"Integrating the proven Corvus ESS technology into our new LNG-battery vessels will help us achieve our goal of minimising the environmental impact of our operations, while reducing fuel consumption and operating costs," said Jonathan Witworth, CEO Seaspan.

"Corvus' experience, industry leadership and safety record made it an easy decision to utilize their battery systems."

Seaspan Swift was bunkered with LNG for the first time last week through a truck to ship operation supported by VARD, FortisBC, and Redwise.
