Cruise operator Carnival Corp. says it will install scrubbers in more than 70 vessels, up from the 32 ships it announced in September.

The $400 million investment will cover 22 ships under the Carnival Cruise Lines brand, nine from Holland America Line, seven Princess Cruises ships, three Cunard vessels, 10 from AIDA Cruises, and six from Costa Cruises.

The company's Carnival UK division P&O Cruises is also considering using the system for vessels operating in European Union (EU)-regulated waters.

"This is a key step forward for Carnival Corporation and its 10 brands -- and most importantly for the environment," said CEO Arnold Donald.

"We believe Carnival Corporation's investment in this industry-leading technology will set a new course in environmental protection and cleaner air for years to come.

"Increasing environmental sustainability is one of our most important corporate goals, and having the new systems on our ships will be another effective way for us to meet that objective."

The company said in March that it had installed scrubbers on seven ships and planned to have 20 or more vessels using the systems by the end of the year.
