Two liquefied natural gas (LNG) companies, Liquiline and LNG America, say they will work together to provide LNG bunkers in the Pacific Northwest and to transport the fuel to Hawaii and Alaska.

U.S.-based LNG America is developing distribution networks and has ordered the first American LNG bunker barges.

Liquiline, which is based in Norway, with a North America branch office in Canada, works with intermodal (ISO) containers, which would be used for the Alaska and Hawaii transportation.

"Liquiline has developed significant expertise with LNG ISO containers and in providing LNG logistical support to companies in the North Sea area and now in Canada," said Calum McClure, president of Liquiline North America.

"A relationship with LNG America provides a depth of knowledge in U.S. energy markets and in the servicing of marine and local markets through LNG bunker/shuttle vessels."

The two companies plan to develop specific proposals for potential LNG buyers in Hawaii and Alaska and for fuel markets at the ports of Seattle and Tacoma.

"By teaming up with Liquiline, LNG America gains immediate experience in the deployment of LNG by ISO container in remote applications," said Keith Meyer, president and CEO of LNG America.

"Both companies have been investigating markets in Alaska and Hawaii and can now join forces with a unique combination of skills to deliver highly competitive and reliable LNG supplies."

LNG America recently announced that the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) would class its first LNG bunker barges, which will move the fuel from a supply source in Louisiana to distribution terminals, as well as bunkering large ships.
