Serious delays are expected at the Chinese port city of Tianjin after two massive explosions Wednesday injured hundreds of people and caused at least 17 deaths, BBC reports.

Reports say the blasts occurred in a warehouse storing "dangerous and chemical goods" in Tianjin's Binhai development zone, with a shipment of explosives being stored at the facility said to be behind the blasts.

The first explosion is said to have been at about 23:30 local time, followed a second blast only seconds later.

A number of videos showing the blasts was posted soon after to video sharing site YouTube.

The explosions are said to have sent shockwaves several kilometres away, with the China Earthquake Networks Centre reporting that the magnitude of the first explosion was the equivalent to the detonation of three tonnes of TNT, while the second equivalent of 21 tonnes.

Many surrounding buildings are said to have sustained structural damages from the blasts, and fires were reported still burning hours after event.

In January, an oil tanker exploded outside China's Zhanjiang port after a cargo hold caught fire during a voyage between Zhuhai and Zhanjiang ports.
