Marine fuel supplier The Geos Group has completed the bases for three new storage tanks at the Port of Blyth, the firm said in an emailed press release.

"The development of our new storage facility in the Port of Blyth has got off to great start, and as the new year begins, we are delighted that the bases are ready and construction of the fuel tanks themselves can now get underway," said Managing Director Barry Newton.

The three tanks, with a capacity of five million litres each, are the first development project in the Blyth Estuary Enterprise Zone, which is intended to bring more economic activity to the port.

The tank bases, completed at the end of December, each consist of 270 cubic metres of concrete in a large steel frame on a foundation of buried steel piles.

With the bases complete, building contractor Halls Construction is now working on access roads to the site, a bund wall, and other parts of the project.

The three tanks represent the first phase of a project that may be further expanded in the future, and they are expected to be finished by mid-2014 at a cost of more than £5 million ($8 million).
