Finnlines Plc (Finnlines) says it will have exhaust gas scrubbers installed on most of its ships to comply with new sulfur limits in emission control areas (ECAs).

The scrubbers, to be installed in late 2014 and early 2015, will allow the company to comply with the sulfur dioxide (SOx) emissions rules "in a cost-efficient manner," while also reducing particulate matter (PM) emissions significantly and cutting nitrogen oxides (NOx) pollution somewhat.

Most ship owners plan to switch to marine gas oil (MGO) bunkers in ECAs to comply with the new rules, with Danish company DFDS one of the few that has decided scrubbers are a better option.

Finnlines has also signed a contract for the reblading of propellers on its Star-class roro-passenger ships to reduce fuel consumption and improve speed.

The investments are part of the company's €50 million ($69 million) 2014 capital expense program.
