The Port of Gothenburg is promising a "substantial discount" for ships using liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers starting next year.

"It has been our firm belief for a long time that LNG is the fuel of the future," said port CEO Magnus Kårestedt.

"This initiative is entirely in line with our ambition to reduce the environmental impact of shipping and create a sustainable Scandinavian freight hub."

LNG powered ships will get a discount of 30 percent on all tariffs beginning in 2015 until December 2018.

Carl Carlsson of the Swedish Shipowners' Association said the discounts could encourage adoption of the fuel.

"It's not technology that is the limiting factor, it's the financial considerations," he said.

"Working within the framework of the Zero Vision Tool project, we will attempt to convince other ports in the Baltic to offer the same type of support."

The Port of Gothenburg is preparing for construction of an LNG terminal as part of a joint venture with the Port of Rotterdam to build an LNG infrastructure.

The European Union (EU) is providing a SEK 305 million ($46.3 million) grant to help establish LNG bunkering facilities at Gothenburg.
