The European Commission (EC) has approved a subsidy to help the Port of Antwerp develop and build a bunkering station for liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers, the port says.

Preparatory work for the development of the bunkering station has already started, and the Belgian port plans to have it in operation by the end of 2015, although details of the European government subsidy have not yet been released.

"By approving the subsidy application the Commission has demonstrated its confidence in LNG as the fuel of the future," the port said.

The port began truck-to-ship LNG bunkering in December, when the LNG-powered barge Argonon, operated by Deen Shipping took on the fuel there.

The barge Greenstream also took on LNG bunkers at Antwerp Tuesday.

The Greenstream is operated by Shell as part of the company's efforts to help develop the LNG marine fuel industry in Europe.
