The French Port of Dunkirk says it is seeking builders for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering station.

The small-scale LNG distribution facility would serve both marine and onshore markets, complementing a full-scale LNG terminal now under construction at the port.

The terminal will be online by the end of 2015, and the port's location makes it the first port of entry in the Emissions Control Area (ECA) that will be able to offer efficient LNG bunkering, the port said.

The European Union (EU) began studying the feasibility of LNG bunkering at Dunkirk more than a year ago as part of its efforts to encourage the adoption of the fuel to reduce emissions by Europe's shipping industry.
