Belgian gas carrier Exmar NV Thursday revealed it has decided against investing in a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering vessel to operate at Antwerp.

Demand for LNG bunkers at Antwerp was not strong enough to warrant the project, said Exmar in its provisional results report for 2014.

"As the necessary critical demand for this service is currently not existing, it was
decided not to jointly invest in an LNG bunker vessel [with the Port of Antwerp]," said Exmar.

The company said the decision resulted from a study for the development of LNG bunkering at Antwerp, completed in conjunction with the port authority.

In November, it was announced that Exmar had been appointed as a partner to the Port of Dunkirk, and will work with French terminal operator Dunkerque LNG to develop LNG bunkering facilities there.

"EXMAR continues to monitor the market for LNG as a fuel," said the company.

In December, Ship & Bunker reported that Shell had commissioned a custom, sea-going LNG bunkering vessel for use in and around the nearby Dutch port, Rotterdam.
