Shell Commissions LNG Bunkering Vessel
Shell has placed an order for a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering vessel from South Korea’s STX Offshore & Shipbuilding (STX), MarineLog reports.
The vessel will load LNG cargo from the Gas Access to Europe (Gate) terminal in Rotterdam and is intended to supply ships at that port.
But the new 6,500 cubic metre-capacity vessel will be seagoing and, therefore, able to supply ships in other locations as well.
“This specialized LNG bunker vessel is good news," said Maarten Wetselaar, Shell's Executive Vice President for Integrated Gas.
"Potential customers need to know that their LNG fuel will be delivered reliably and safely.”
“Shell's investment in this vessel, as well as commitment to buy capacity at the Gate terminal, underlines our confidence in LNG becoming a bigger part of the fuel mix."
The design is said to be innovative offering energy efficiency, manoeuvrability, and a flexible transfer system.
Shell said earlier this year that it would buy capacity from the Gate terminal.
The Port of Rotterdam announced it would allow ship-to-ship LNG bunkering around the same time.
