Energy giant Shell will buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity from the Port of Rotterdam's Gas Access To Europe (Gate) terminal, Seatrade Global reports.

With the deal, the terminal will be able to expand, increasing capacity for LNG bunkering to serve the Northern Europe Emissions Control Area (ECA).

The terminal, a joint venture of Gasunie, Vopak, and OMV, plans to add a new jetty and dedicated LNG terminal by the end of 2016, and to charter a LNG bunkering vessel for ship-to-ship transfers.

"We are pleased to have reached this agreement," said Maarten Wetselaar, Shell's executive vice president.

"LNG is a viable option for fuelling cleaner and more sustainable transport.

"We believe LNG will form a bigger part of the transport fuel mix in the future, and this project demonstrates our confidence in LNG as a fuel option."

The Gate terminal has been cited as a leader of Europe's efforts to make LNG bunkering possible.
