Star Bulk Receives the Second of Six Fuel-Efficient Newbuilds

Athens-based dry bulk specialist, Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (Star Bulk) Monday announced it has taken delivery of M/V Leviathan, a fuel saving 182,000 deadweight tonne Capesize bulker built by Japan Marine United.

It is the second of a series of six similar Capesize ships being built for Star Bulk.

"The JMU Capesize vessels are all built with modern specifications and we anticipate they will have amongst the lowest fuel consumptions and carbon emissions of vessels of similar size and age," said Star Bulk.

In addition, Star Bulk has signed contracts for the building of 35 further fuel efficient ships of various sizes.

Furthermore, the company will take on 26 second-hand ships from Excel Maritime Carriers Ltd..

Delivery of all ships is expected to take place between now and early 2016.

M/V Leviathan, which is understood to bring Star Bulk's fleet to a total of 40 currently operating vessels, will for the time being be employed in the spot market.

Greece-based dry bulking operation, NewLead Holdings Ltd., yesterday also announced it has taken delivery of a fuel efficient bulker to add to its fleet.
