The Baltic Ports Organization (BPO), which represents 45 member ports on the Baltic Sea, has announced the initiation of a new project focussed on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering infrastructure in the region, LNG World News reports.

The BPO has identified in excess of ten ports which could see development of common, small-scale LNG bunkering facilities.

The "LNG Bunkering Barges in Baltic Sea" project is aimed at devising a harmonised strategy for a LNG infrastructure network at member ports, in order that the experience can be shared within the region.

According to the report, it is hoped that a LNG infrastructure will increase access of bunkering facilities to early implementers of LNG, such as shipping company Viking Line.

In addition, it is noted that the results of the project may benefit not just the Baltic region but the wider EU.

Earlier this month, Baltic country Finland announced it was publicly funding coastal LNG facilities which could be used for bunkering.
