Havyard Ship Technology (Havyard) will complete the conversion of two shuttle ferries to hybrid electric propulsion for Norwegian ferry owner and operator Torghatten Nord AS (Torghatten Nord), World Maritime News reports.

The conversion will be completed on Torghatten Nord's 120 PBE ferries Melshorn and Vardehorn, with work said to be commencing immediately and concluding by the end of the year.

It is reported that the conversion will also ready the vessels for conversion to full electric propulsion in the future.

Siemens AS (Siemens) is noted to be the key supplier of the electric propulsion systems required for the conversion project.

Last week, Ship & Bunker reported that Siemens has also been selected to supply propulsion systems for two new battery-powered ferries, set to be operated by Fjord1 on the Anda-Lote route on Norway's west coast.
