Skangas and Eesti Gaas Sign LNG Bunker Supply Deals with Tallink
AS Tallink Grupp (Tallink) Tuesday announced that it has signed contracts with Estonia's AS Eesti Gaas (Eesti Gaas) and Finland's Skangas AS (Skangas) for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the ferry operator's new LNG-powered vessel, Megastar.
As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the vessel is slated to operate on Tallink's Tallinn-Helsinki route upon delivery in 2017.
"Tallink has the aim to be the motivator for industry developments and it's good to have strong partners in several countries, who share the same ambition – to drive the environmentally friendly energy usage and development of the supply chain in the region," said Captain Tarvi-Carlos Tuulik, Head of Shipmanagement at Tallink.
"With Eesti Gaas and Skangas we feel well prepared to welcome the new member, fast passenger ferry Megastar to our fleet, to serve one of our most important and busiest routes."
Megastar, which will also be capable of running on diesel, has been called "environmentally sound," with Tallink noting that its LNG-powered operations will enable the elimination of sulfur and soot particles, and will decrease nitrogen and CO2 emissions compared to conventional operations.
In June, Finland-based Neste Corporation (Neste) said that its low sulfur marine fuel offerings provided Tallink with an average 3 percent energy efficiency increase in its engines compared to HFO.
