Kii Inc. (Kii) has announced its collaboration with the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) on an Internet of Things (IoT) pilot project, which was launched by HPA in March 2016, and is intended to monitor and record emissions of SOx, NOx and fine dust.

The project's technical management is noted to have been carried out by Kii in partnership with air quality measuring device manufacturer AQMesh.

Kii explains that, over a three month period, emission values were collected centrally by Kii's IoT platform, enabling HPA to analyze the air quality at different locations within the port and test the functionality of various environmental sensors.

"The HPA develops numerous solutions, such as the provision of shore power for cruise liners at anchor," explains Kii.

"Reducing emissions in the port of Hamburg is one of the new solutions being developed and tested, with the dual goal of not only measuring pollution but also identifying the sources of air pollution."

Last year, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that Hamburg had been selected as the launch base for drone test flights in a study intended to explore the feasibility of using drones for emissions monitoring in European emission control areas (ECAs).
