The world's first single-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) tug has entered service at Statoil's Kaarstoe Gas Terminal in Norway, industry news site The Maritime Executive reports.

The M/T Borgøy emits 26 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) and 80 to 90 percent less nitrogen oxides (NOx) than its conventional counterparts, eliminates sulfur emissions, and drops particulate matter to near zero.

The vessel was designed by Norwegian Buksèr og Berging with the help of Marine Design in Norway and Sanmar's Istanbul shipyard.

The 35-metre-long tug completed sea trials this month and began its maiden voyage last week.
It is designed for weekly bunkering and takes 45 minutes to refuel.

Rolls-Royce, which provided the gas engines for the tug, said in December that the vessel's use of LNG alone, rather than having dual-fuel capacity, makes its systems simpler and less prone to methane slip.
