German engineering company TGE Marine says it will design and supply the liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel gas package for the conversion of a Qatari Q-Max carrier to a dual-fuel system.

MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN Diesel) has contracted with TGE marine on the project, which will involve the modification of a low-speed, 2-stroke main engine to use Man Diesel's electronically controlled gas injection system.

The converted ship will be the first to use a low-speed diesel engine running on LNG.

"We are extremely pleased to have been selected by [MAN Diesel] as partner for its first conversion contract for one of the largest LNG-carriers in the market," said TGE Marine CEO Manfred Küver.

"This prestigious project is certainly a signal for the market that the MAN 2-stroke ME-GI solution is one of the most economic approaches of a modern LNG carrier design."

TGE Marine has worked with U.S. partner ACD on the design of the high-pressure fuel gas supply system, including its pumping and vaporising equipment.

Qatari energy company RasGas Co. Ltd. (RasGas) recently said it is preparing to test a prototype of a vessel converted to run on LNG, and, if the pilot project is successful, may convert 13 gas carriers.
