Bureau Veritas S.A. (BV) Tuesday announced that Terntank Rederi AS' (Terntank's) 15,000 DWT Ternsund is the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled newbuild oil/chemical tanker to be classed by the company.

Ternsund is said to have been built under BV class by China's AVIC Dingheng Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Avic Dingheng) in "close cooperation" between BV, AVIC Dingheng, and Terntank.

The vessel, which was delivered to Terntank at the end of June 2016, is said to be the first of four ships to be equipped with a dual-fuel low-speed Wärtsilä RT-flex50-D engine, and the first such engine installation to be completed under BV class.

"We led the way globally classing dual-fuel gas carriers and we are now leading the way with newbuildings of different ship types using LNG as fuel," said Philippe Donche-Gay, President of BV.

"Step by step shipping is moving to cleaner fuels and Bureau Veritas is helping it to do that safely and with confidence."

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, Ternsund became the first vessel to be bunkered with LNG at the Port of Rotterdam earlier this month, as well as the first to receive Rotterdam's 10 percent discount on seaport dues for utilising LNG bunkers.

In October, Ship & Bunker reported that BV had published a new notation for LNG bunkering tankers.
