Geir Axel Oftedahl, Business Development Director of Hull Performance Solutions of Jotun Group (Jotun) says the growing adoption of hull and propeller performance monitoring is encouraging," but that "more needs to be done."

"There is a need to spur further development and increase awareness in this important field," Oftedahl told attendees at last month's inaugural HullPIC conference.

The conference, which was jointly organised by Jotun and DNV GL, is said to have come in response to the industry's need for proven ways to measure hull and propeller performance.

"Performance management is an evolving field, especially in light of the ISO 19030. The new standard will help to accelerate industry-wide best practices and transparency," said Volker Bertram, Senior Project Manager at DNV GL, emphasising that performance monitoring is currently transitiong to a mature phase.

The conference's presentations discussed a variety of technical subjects around data acquisition and required corrections for varying operational and ambient conditions.

That included a presentation by Andreas Krapp, Analyst Manager of Hull Performance Solutions at Jotun, who discussed aspects of speed-power reference curves, while Sergiu Paereli, a Hull Performance Solutions analyst discussed some of the challenges related to separating propeller performance from hull performance.

Last month, Ship & Bunker reported that a Gearbulk Ltd (Gearbulk) owned Supramax bulker achieved a "staggering" $1.5 million in bunker cost savings over a 5 year period, along with a corresponding 12,055 tonne reduction in CO2 emissions, resulting from the application of a Jotun hull coating.
