"Breakthrough Order" for Fuel-Saving ABB Package
Swiss power distribution and automation company ABB says it has received a "breakthrough order" for fuel-saving Azipod CZ electrical propulsion systems and automation systems for two vessels being built by COSCO (Nantong) Shipyard Co. Ltd.
"ABB already has a large market share in terms of onboard power and propulsion systems," said Heikki Soljama, head of ABB's business unit marine and Cranes.
"However, this order represents a milestone in our strategy to offer complete solutions for power, propulsion, automation and vessel control.
"It is the first embodiment of the 'total integration' and we believe customers will see a step forward in benefits when one supplier is providing a total package of integrated, cutting edge solutions that deliver enhanced energy efficiency, reliability and improved asset management."
The two offshore accommodation vessels were ordered by Logitel Offshore, a Singapore-registered subsidiary of Norway's Sevan Marine.
ABB will provide power distribution systems, including generators, switchboards and main transformers, propulsion transformers, frequency converters, six Azipod CZ units, and automation systems based on ABB's System 800xA Extended Automation platform.
The integrated packages, which represent the first order of their kind for ABB in the floater business, will be delivered to the shipyard by October 2014.
Last year, ABB delivered four Azipod C systems for a wind turbine installation vessel built by Samsung Shipyard in South Korea.
