Emsys: Rush to Install Scrubbers has Started

WR Systems Ltd (WR) says in an emailed press release that its emissions monitoring technology, Emsys, has been ordered as the compliance monitor system for five different scrubber types.

"As 2015 approaches, the anticipated rush to install scrubbers has started and announcements of major scrubber contracts are commonplace," the company said.

A variety of scrubber designs, including seawater, freshwater, hybrid, dry, open loop, and closed loop, are now on the market.

WR said the Emsys system is attractive because its use of laser sensor technology means it can measure emissions at low gas temperatures with high humidity in the exhaust stream.

It can also measure multiple gasses including nitrous oxides (NOx), methane (CH4), particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO), as well as providing more standard sulphur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements.

"Scrubbers are complex systems and when combined with other emissions reduction devices/alternate fuels become an important part of the vessel's efficiency and compliance calculations," said Simon Brown, WR's Director of International Maritime Business.

"The cost of operation for these systems can be optimized if you have accurate feedback from the top of the stack."

WR announced last year that Emsys was being installed on two Carnival Cruise Line ships, but it is bound by confidentiality agreements in discussing other contracts for the system.
