Alfa Laval has signed a patent licence deal to use technology belonging to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in developing fuel conditioning systems for liquefied natural gas (LNG) ships, the company has announced

Under the terms of the agreement, Alfa Laval will be allowed to take advantage of DSME’s patents on high pressure fuel gas supply systems in developing Alfa Laval Fuel Conditioning Modules for use with high pressure gas injection engines built by MAN Diesel & Turbo.

“The agreement strengthens Alfa Laval’s position as a reliable partner to LNG carriers and a leader in further developing fuel conditioning technologies for alternative fuels for marine propulsion,” said Roberto Comelli, business manager for fuel conditioning systems.

The company said that it had also acquired Korea-based manufacturer CorHex late last year to expand in high-pressure LNG fuel gas applications.

“We fully expect the development of LNG technologies to continue and the uptake of LNG to increase over the next decade, and Alfa Laval will be well-positioned to meet the demand,” said Niclas Dahl, market unit manager for marine energy.

Alfa Laval added that it ultimately hopes to adapt its fuel conditioning system for commercial ships using LNG as a secondary or even tertiary fuel.

Early last year, the company opened its research and development facility in Denmark, in part to further along its research of fuel conditioning systems.
