Total Lubmarine has announced the launch of new "single oil solution," Talusia Optima, a cylinder lube oil that is compatible with high sulfur heavy fuel oils, as well as ultra-low sulfur distillate fuels.

Talusia Optima is said to be intended to simplify the management of vessels operating within and outside of emission control areas (ECAs), as it is suitable for use alongside fuels with sulfur contents from 0 to 3.5 percent.

"It will make life on-board easier for ships’ crews and greatly minimise the risks encountered during fuel changeovers," said Jean-Philippe Roman, Total Lubmarine’s Technical Director, of the new lube.

"We are confident that Talusia Optima will extend the life of engines it is used in and with well monitored feed rate reduction programmes in place, offer potential savings on lube spend."

Sea trial tests are said to have shown that Talusia Optima has a higher resistance to adhesive wear compared to conventional Base Number (BN) 100 cylinder lube oils, as well as a 30 percent better piston coating wear rate.

Regular drain oil analysis during sea trials is noted to have shown that Talusia Optima’s residual BN is consistently higher than other lubricants, while total iron content is always lower and without ash deposit formation.

Total Lubmarine says that a final inspection of a mega boxship that had used Talusia Optima for 4300 hours on Asia-Europe liner routes, showed that the engine had perfect piston and liner cleanliness.

"As the developers of the industry’s first single oil solution, Talusia Universal, we knew that demand for a single oil solution was strong," said Serge Dal Farra, Total Lubmarine’s Global Marketing Manager.

"No ship operator or engineer wants added complexity and we have brought a lube that is compatible with all fuel types to market to meet our customers’ pressing need for a simple solution."

Talusia Optima is noted to be available to customers in major ports, and has received a no objection letter from Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) for use of the product with its two-stroke engine ranges.

In December, Total Lubmarine announced that its new blending plant in Singapore, intended to meet demand for marine lubricants in the Asia Pacific market, had produced its first batch of Total Lubmarine products.
