The Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (Paris MoU) Monday said it has decided that in 2018 it will run a Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) focussing on MARPOL Annex VI compliance.

The decision came at its latest 49th meeting, which was held in Haugesund, Norway from May 23 to 27.

Secretary General Richard Schiferli said the decision demonstrated the importance to the Paris MoU of environmental awareness and compliance, especially regarding prevention of air pollution from ships.

The current member States of the Paris MoU are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the Russian Federation, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Every year more than 18,000 inspections take place on board foreign ships in the Paris MoU ports, with an overall aim "to eliminate the operation of sub-standard ships through a harmonized system of port State control."

So far this year the organisation has noted its inspections have resulted in a total of five instances where vessels have been refused access to the Paris MoU region.
