Alfa Laval says it will supply its PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems for three roll-on/roll-off cargo vessels being retrofitted for DFDS Seaways, according to a report published on the World Maritime News website.

Polish shipyard Remontowa is retrofitting the vessels, with delivery scheduled for July 2013.

"We must address the upcoming regulations head on, and we've seen that PureSOx has proven that it actually works on the Ficaria Seaways," said Kasper Moos, vice president and head of DFDS' technical organisation.

"Therefore we have decided to go further by refitting three additional ships with PureSOx systems, which will wash the sulphur content in the exhaust gas from heavy fuel oil with a sulphur content of 2.2 percent to a level below 0.1%."

DFDS provides shipping and logistics services in Northern Europe, with routes across the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the English Channel.

Alfa Laval also announced an SEK 170 million ($25.2 million) order for retrofit orders of PureSOx systems with delivery due in 2014 but said it cannot disclose the customer or details of the order due to a confidentiality agreement.

"The order proves that Alfa Laval's scrubber technology is an attractive solution to ship owners that need to comply with IMO's convention for the reduction of sulphur oxides, be it for retrofits or for installation onboard new vessels" said Lars Renström, president and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group.
