Classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) Tuesday released a new version of its Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships, which it says provides thorough and updated information on key design features pertaining to bunkering, hull structure, fire safety, and explosion prevention measures for gas fueled ships, including those that utilise liquefied natural gas (LNG) and methanol.

"With the introduction of increasingly strict environmental regulations, the industry is now turning toward the use of cleaner fuels such as LNG and more recently other low flashpoint fuels such as methanol to curb their NOx, SOx, and PM emissions," said Class NK, noting that the newly released guidelines build on structural requirements of the company's first version, published in 2009.

The new version of that document also include consideration for recent technological developments, such as amendments to the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), as well as discussions on safety requirements around the use of methanol/ethanol as bunkers, and safety measures for vessels not originally intended use LNG bunkers.

ClassNK says vessels that meet the criteria for conversion to LNG propulsion will be given the LNG Ready notation under the updated guidelines.

In June, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced that the new IGF Code will have an initial focus on LNG, and will "provide mandatory provisions for the arrangement, installation, control and monitoring of machinery, equipment and systems using low-flashpoint fuels."
