Environmental maritime technology designer Eco Marine Power (EMP) Monday announced it has received acceptance from classification society ClassNK for its Aquarius Marine Solar Power system to be installed aboard ClassNK classed vessels.

"The acceptance of this system is a major step forward for EMP and brings to the shipping market a renewable energy solution that can be integrated with other systems on-board ships," said EMP.

The company plans to release two marine solar power packages, called Aquarius Marine Solar Power, and Aquarius Management and Automation System (MAS) + Solar.

"These marine solar power systems from EMP include a marine computer system with LCD monitor, marine-grade solar power panels, battery charge controllers, energy storage, data communication devices and interface/control units," said EMP.

It is understood that the systems allow ships to install solar panels which can be used to charge batteries to augment power generation aboard vessels.

The Aquarius MAS + Solar would include additional hardware and software compared to the first, enabling functionality such as bunker consumption monitoring.

It is understood that the Aquarius MAS hardware and software are built around the established KEI 3240 Data Logger said already to be in use aboard hundreds of vessels including tug boats, training ships, tankers, and bulk ore carriers.

According to the company, the system is suitable for newbuild projects as well as retrofits.

"It is also becoming clear that solar power has an important role to play on ships in terms of reducing fuel consumption and harmful emissions," said EMP's Chief Technology Officer, Greg Atkinson.

Last year, EMP first publicly unveiled some of its bunker saving technologies at Sea Japan 2014, with Atkinson telling Ship & Bunker "the Aquarius Eco Ship is not science fiction nor are the technologies it incorporates just ideas."
