DNV GL has announced that Seaspan Ship Management Ltd. (Seaspan) will utilise its fleet monitoring and management solution ECO Insight in an effort to boost energy efficiency and vessel performance.

"Close monitoring of the performance of our fleet is in line with our mission of safe, reliable and economical operations," said Peter Jackson, director of the projects and technology department for Seaspan.

"The ability to measure hull degradation very accurately was what made this performance management solution interesting for us," added Jackson, noting that the company has invested significant effort to develop the company's fleet performance.

Further, Jackson explains that ECO Insight allows Seaspan to benefit from enriched performance information by integrating industry data alongside its existing vessel reporting system, including AIS benchmarks, satellite weather, and full CFD baseline computations.

"Fleet performance management is the next wave in energy management and offers significant benefits to owners, managers and operators," Torsten Büssow, Head of DNV GL's Fleet Performance Management unit.

Büssow says ECO Insight can help users identify reasons for variations in energy efficiency between vessels, providing an example of two vessels of that same age and size differing by 20 percent or more in terms of annual fuel oil consumption.

"ECO Insight can help customers understand why this may be the case," concludes Büssow.

In March, DNV GL announced the launch the new fuel saving analytics module as part of its ECO Insight offering.
