Baleària Eurolínias Marítimas S.A. (Baleària) today announced that it has signed a 200 million ($214.92 million) agreement with Cantiere Navale Visentini S.r.l. (Cantiere Navale Visentini) to build two new dual gas engine sister ferries.

"With the construction of these two vessels, the company takes a further step forward in its commitment to use natural gas and eco-efficiency in their fleet," said the company, noting that "the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other clean energies reduce CO2 and NOx emissions by more than 40 percent while at the same time eliminating extremely harmful emissions of sulfur and other particles."

Baleària says the two gas-powered ships will be equipped with eco-efficient technologies, with Adolfo Utor, president of Baleària, commenting that the new ferries will provide the company with a competitive edge.

The two ships "incorporate the latest technologies to be more sustainable and ensure the best passenger travel experience," said Utor

The new orders are expected to be operational by the end of 2018.

Yesterday, Ship & Bunker reported that Baleària, along with Gas Natural SDG, S.A. (Gas Natural Fenosa), had completed the first LNG bunkering of Baleària's ferry, Abel Matutes, at the Port of Barcelona.
