The ongoing drop in bunker prices has led Hawaii-based shipping company Matson, Inc. to announce that it will lower its fuel surcharge on its Hawaii, Guam/Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI) and Micronesia services for the second time in the past three months.

The fuel surcharge decrease is by two percentage points, with Hawaii services seeing a reduction to 37.5 percent from 35.5 percent, Guam/CNMI to 36 percent from 38 percent, and Micronesia to 41 percent from 43 percent.

"We are pleased to be able to make this downward adjustment to our fuel surcharge, which for most customers represents a reduction in shipping costs ranging from $40 to $70 per container," Dave Hoppes, senior vice president of ocean services, said in an emailed statement.

"We have been encouraged by the recent moderation in bunker fuel prices, and remain focused on diligently exploring ways in which we can maximize fuel efficiency for our fleet."

The company said that it would continue to monitor fuel costs, with the current changes effective December 21, 2014.

Matson also recently announced service rate increases effective January 25, 2015, where eastbound and westbound Guam/CNMI, along with westbound Hawaii services will see hikes of $225 per container.

In October, Matson decreased surcharge rates by five percentage points.
