International shipping coalition Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) has announced in an emailed press release that all of its members have signed up to a set of shared commitments "to set a clear benchmark for sustainable practices."

Each member has agreed to four commitments, namely to publicly report on sustainability, maintain a sustainability strategy linked to its core business, set clear reduction targets for environmental issues that are most material to their activities, and aim to deliver a positive impact on people and society.

SSI brings together global players in the shipping industry with a view to tying sustainability issues to commercial growth.

"Tackling fundamental issues such as defining what areas of sustainability are material to an organisation, and how these should be addressed to meet business goals, are critical to any major company's long-term survival," said Stephanie Draper, co-founder and Chairwoman of SSI.

SSI hopes the shared commitments will be a catalyst for progress among members.

"Putting a stake in the ground to fulfil these four areas in each member's organisation will provide a foundation for demonstrating tangible progress over time," said SSI Director Alastair Fischbacher.

"These commitments signal areas for taking immediate action," added Draper.

Recent SSI member, classification society ABS, was recently said to be involved in the classification of the "world's first" compressed natural gas carrier.
