Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (Hyundai Heavy) announced Tuesday it has won a $1.2 billion order from a Greek shipowner to build ten fuel efficient container ships.

The ultra-large ships will have a 13,800 TEU carrying capacity and according the statement will use 10% less fuel compared to existing vessels of a similar class.

The 368 metre long ships are due to be delivered in the second half of 2013 to the second half of 2014 and will be chartered by Taiwanese container line Evergreen Marine Corp. (Taiwan) Ltd.

"These orders are noteworthy considering the current sluggish shipbuilding market, " an official at Hyundai Heavy said.

The deal will be a welcome addition to the $7.3 billion of year-to-date new orders that Ulsan, South Korea headquartered Hyundai Heavy said it had at the end May 2012, but still leaves it some distance from their new orders target of $30.55 billion for the year.
